During the Great Depression, the United States put men to work improving and extending the nation’s roads and highways; hovewer these roads built in the 1930’s were for 1950’s faster cars, a bit inadequate so the roads were again widened and divided using as an example, the Germany’s Autobahns.
Today, modern interstate highways are wonderful ways to get somewhere fast as it’s not just the destination that is important, so is the journey; large parts of the US highway system can still take you someplace without all the small towns and tourist traps in-between.
